Birdie Play dates.. Safe or not?
This is entirely just my point of view.
You've heard of Doggie Play dates, Even Doggie Parks - They may be safe for dogs but when it comes to Parrots (no matter the size) it's not safe.
it's a lot easier to know when a dog is sick than it is for a bird!
Taking a bird to go "play" with other birds rather they're routinely vet checked or not is not safe for Multiple reasons
The bird Theirs or yours could be sick, it could be a carrier of a disease that would be passed on from this "play date"
it is also not safe to meet at a park for a birdie play date Even if birds are staying in the cages When you get a lot of birds together It's a breeding ground for the passing of illnesses and diseases.
It's also not a very smart idea to take your birds to Bird club meetings. Yes the people may be vigilant about keeping their birds area clean and taking them to vets, but a lot of illnesses do not show up on standard testing so if they're a carrier of a disease no one would know until that bird made another bird ill.
Also never take your bird to a bird fair/show - most won't allow it any way but I've seen some that do allow it and this shouldn't be allowed!
If you want to enjoy out side time with your Bird(s) do it properly with out any birdie friends that don't already live with them. You can buy a small cage and take your birds for a walk(prepare the cage and make sure all doors are securely locked if you buy one with a plastic base zip tie the base to the cage part so it doesn't fall off!. If you have a medium - large bird they make a few different "leashes" you can get your bird accustomed to and use those for walks when the weather is nice. They make flight suits which is a little fabric suit that goes over the bird and the bird isn't able to poop on you, it comes with a leash that you wrap around your wrist or put over your shoulder to secure the bird from flying away. They also make Halters but make sure you only buy the Brand name Aviator Harness (the Feather Tether is not safe!) it is a little more expensive but it is VERY safe, and works great. They also make little "packs" they look like back packs and you can carry it on your back or your chest with your bird securely inside it can see all the sights still and enjoy a nice walk with you.
The following links will show you what types of items you can get to take your feathered friend outside for a secure nice walk, picnic at a park (With out other birds) or just to sit out side in the back yard and enjoy some quality time!
Please remember if you do not use a flight suit or Aviator Harness Then the bird MUST stay in the locked cage- even if she/he is clipped ONE swift wind and your bird will be gone forever!
